Savvik Says Safety First in Sleep Measures
The hours of work completed in a day in the EMS industry can be long with seemingly endless shifts that can last up to 24 hours or more. Irregular sleeping patterns and sleep deprivation are common issues public safety professionals face on a day-to-day basis. With the help of Dr. Daniel Patterson, Associate Professor for Emergency Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, he is helping to change the narrative for all workers. Inspired by his family history of paramedicine, Dr. Patterson found his calling from passions stemming from his uncle who was a paramedic. His family ties to the public safety industry led him to focus on the health and safety for emergency workers. Dr. Patterson has been with the University of Pittsburgh since 2007 and is focused on improving the sleep health of EMS clinicians. In his research, Dr. Patterson strives to identify threats to different aspects of sleep
Freedom House Ambulance’s Untold Story of Unprecedented Innovation for Emergency Medical Services
The story of Freedom House Ambulance is little known to many, but it pioneered the forefronts of mobile emergency medical services in the start of the 1960s for public safety professionals. Founded in 1967, Freedom House Ambulance served Pittsburgh citizens in the Hill District and the Northside when national standards for ambulances and paramedics did not exist yet. In a time where skills for a professional paramedic were nonexistent, Pittsburgh police officers provided ambulance service for the city by transporting patients in the back of the police cars. The revolution for better medical care was advanced by Phillip Hallen, president of The Faulk Foundation from 1963-1999, along with various dedicated helping hands. Freedom House Ambulance was designed to provide unemployed African Americans with careers through the help of Morton Coleman of the Pittsburgh mayor’s office and the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work. At the time, Hallen involved James
5.11 Boot Winners Prevail in Love
Recent 5.11 Tactical boot winners Charles and Heather have a story unlike anyone else. The realm of EMS can be harsh in dealing with the unforeseen circumstances and brutal realities of saving lives. Charles and Heather’s strong bond with each other help to advocate for mental health awareness in the field while having a love story to tell all. Determining boundaries of personal and professional lives can be difficult in the public safety sector. Charles and Heather both teach high school students close by in Norfolk, Virginia and work actively as EMS and EMT professionals in their field. As it seems true, opposites attract, even if one person is sure to not date someone in the same field. Heather says, “I adamantly did not want to date in rescue and fire. I wanted to keep my circle small because rescue is rescue and work is work.” Fortunately for the two,
Part II: Saving Your Life from the Modern Diet
The work performed in saving lives is the utmost reward in the public safety sector. Unfortunately, it does come at a personal cost. Irregular hours and over time work can consume a public safety professional’s life and ultimately take a toll on the mental and physical performance while on duty. Consuming on-the-go meals for a quick fix, sleep deprivation and working marathon shifts cause difficulties for living a healthy life. To combat these struggles, professionals can take the best course of action by planning through a special report, “Does Diet Impact Fire/EMS Performance and Outcomes?” Jamie Pospisil, Captain of Lincoln Fire and Rescue, says, “Prepare for each shift by planning for meals in advance. Along with that, pack a cooler with healthy snacks so when you are on back-back-to-back incidents you don’t make poor decisions during a period of hunger.” Finding a balanced schedule of food prepping and planning can help reduce
